John Nweke M.A., R.C.C.

I have been working in the mental health field for seven years, beginning as a Behavioral Interventionist helping clients living with Autism through Applied Behavioral Analysis. Afterwards, I spent some time as a Shelter worker, learning about the impact of societal influences on our most vulnerable populations. Moreover, before training as a counsellor my undergraduate studies focused primarily on biology, and psychology. Through it all, the importance of cultivating a holistic, or biopsychosocial lens, has been necessary. Life’s challenges often affect various domains of our wellbeing, and may be caused by a multitude of factors. A biopsychosocial lens allows us to explore these facets with intention and compassion.

In addition to my current role as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, I work as a Mental Health and Substance Use Clinician at Fraser Health. In this position I help clients explore the intersection between their mental health and substance use, as well as how they interact with each other. Beyond the cultivation of awareness, I aim to empower clients with the tools and knowledge to create the lives they want to live. Towards this, I work from a Cognitive Behavioral Therapy framework with a significant emphasis on Mindfulness.

The goal of therapy is for the client to become their own therapist, to learn to recognize hurdles, to increase trust in their ability to manage challenges, and cultivate a compassionate view of themselves along the way. I hold firmly to the idea that you are the expert on you, my role in our journey together is to help guide you along that path.
